How to Increase the Earnings on Your Certificate

It's a strategy called laddering.  Here's how it works.  Open a 1 year, 2 year or 3 year certificate.  After the first year, your 1 year certificate will mature. Roll that certificate into a 3 year term, thereby maximizing the interest rate you'll earn. Your remaining 2 certificates will continue generating interest.

Continue the ladder by rolling the money from your matured certificate each year into a 3 year term. This strategy allows you to earn the maximum interest rate while providing access to some of your money on an annual basis, should you need it. 

Below is an example of how laddering can increase your return during the first year.  As you continue to roll certificates to 3 year terms your return on investment will increase.

Spreading the maturities from 1 to 3 years is just one strategy. If you prefer to tie up your money for shorter time spans you could invest in 6, 12 and 18 month certificates.
